The Internet is considered one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, which increases the need for more efficient website design that reduces the environmental impact. Especially websites in the electronic commerce sector, also known as e-commerce, contribute significantly to these emissions due to their increased page weight, the amount of multimedia content and interactive functions. This master's thesis therefore deals with the topic of sustainable user experience design, or UX design for short, in e-commerce and examines the extent to which both climate-friendly and conventional online stores already apply sustainable design principles. The aim of this work is to identify sustainable UX design principles and to develop practical recommendations for UX and web designers of online stores. The empirical research comprises a comparative case study analysis of a total of ten companies as well as expert interviews, which provide insights into the practical application of sustainable design principles and possible challenges. The research showed that both climate-conscious and conventional online stores have potential for optimization, especially in the energy-efficient integration of image files. According to experts, sustainable web design principles in online retail offer the opportunity to position oneself as a sustainable brand and gain competitive advantage in the long term but require careful planning and implementation to overcome potential challenges. Accordingly, an interactive guide for UX or web designers and store developers was developed as part of this work, which aims to increase the implementation of sustainable UX design principles in e-commerce.
