Abstract

There are constantly new fields of applications in the age of the digital change and the increasing advance of mobile technologies. Entire business processes are handled by mobile applications nowadays. This change also impacts emergency services and civil protection. In these fields, rapid sharing of data is of particular importance. Therefore, mobile services can add significant value by improving coordination and communication.

This thesis deals with the question, how mobile applications can be used for emer-gency services, focusing on respiratory protection for fire departments. Respiratory protection is an area that will become more and more important in the future, and is also one of the most hazardous tasks during fire brigade missions. For this reason, the use of respiratory protective equipment is subject to stringent safety regulations including continuous respiratory protection monitoring systems which allows a comprehensive overview of respiratory carriers used, and monitoring the amount of remaining air in their oxygen bottle. At the time this thesis was written, there was no mobile Android application for this particular purpose. The aim of this diploma thesis is the implementation of a mobile Android application for the execution of respiratory protection monitoring for fire-fighting operations and exercises. A multi-phase research process serves as basis for the implementation and the subsequent evaluation. At the beginning, it is examined which requirements, in terms of functionality and usability, are necessary for the technical implementation. In the design phase, a suitable concept is developed based on the knowledge gained and the application is implemented accordingly. The result is a mobile application that implements all necessary functionalities for respiratory protection monitoring. Finally, this app developed is evaluated through usability tests.
