Energieerlebniswelt Sonnenplatz

Energy efficiency and sustainability are central topics in all areas of our lives. The association “Sonnenplatz Großschönau” is dedicated to sustainable and energy efficient building.

Early 2013, the establishment of an Energy Adventure World is planned. This Energy Adventure World deals with the topic „housing“ from the beginning of time to the future. The media computing research group analysed the possible use for computer games in the museum context. In a concept paper for the exhibition an opportunity to introduce the visitors to the topic in a playful way has been developed. The goal of the game, which is played on a small tablet computer, is to achieve the smallest possible ecological footprint by energy-efficient actions. The game is played while discovering the exhibition. The necessary information for successful actions in the game can be found in the exhibition.

When the interior of the house was selected, the player is presented with the changes of his score in energy efficiency, quality of life and money. The house can then be transferred onto a multitouch table, where it can be rotated, sized and placed besides other houses in a village and can be compared to them. At the end of the game, the visitors can take a paper printout of this footprint with them. The printout includes information about the actions in the games that resulted in the footprint.

A functional prototype based on the concept was developed by a group of master students and finished by our research group members. The graphics were made by a game graphics specialist from Team Vienna Games. The table game was designed and developed by the former group member Martin Grubinger.
